Turtle Nesting in Front of Casa Oceano, Tango Mar Beach, Costa Rica

Turtle coming out of the Pacific Ocean to lay her eggs in front of Casa Oceano vacation rental home in Costa Rica

Guests at Casa Oceano watch in amazement at the very rare occurance of a turtle coming up on the beach during the day to lay her eggs!

Tango Mar Beach is home to two different species of turtles that come ashore during the nesting season - primarily the months of September, October and November. Nesting happens at night, and our Casa Oceano staff can take you on a tour down the beach with red flashlights, so that the turtles are not disturbed. Turtles don't see red light, and so that way you can quietly watch them digging a hole in the sand at a high point of the beach, laying their eggs, covering the eggs and tamping the sand down, and then returning to the sea.

Turtles will lay between 60 and 100 eggs at a time and then the baby turtles will hatch in about 45 days and scramble for the ocean, hopefully under the cover of darkness and safe from most preditors. Years later, when mature, they will make their way back to the same spot on the same beach to once again begin the cycle of life.

Finding Turtle Tracks on The Beach at Sunrise

Walking down the beach at sunrise during the turtle nesting season, you will often see turtle tracks in the sand going up from the water to the highest point on the sand, where they have laid their eggs.
