Cultural Activities - Costa Rican Christmas Tamales
In the spirit of the traditional Costa Rican ways, local ticos friends, guests and the owners of Casa Oceano help prepare Christmas Tamales during the holiday season. Ingredients include masa (corn flour), and a variety of other favorites inside – potatoes, chile dulce (red peppers), whole corn, pork, chicken and other personal selections, depending upon individual tastes.
The outer covering of the tamale is a slice from a banana leaf, in this case from trees on the property itself, which is first heated over an open gas flame to make it more flexible. The wrapped tamales are then given as gifts, usually before Christmas, to family and close friends. And, of course, consumed by the hungry cooks and family!
